What Does an ENT Specialist Do?
An ENT specialist, or Otolaryngologist, is a doctor who has finished at least five years of surgical residency training. They will need one year in general surgery and four years in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) to give them the training that they need. After the five years of residency, many of the doctors choose to find a sub-specialty to further their knowledge of one particular area of their profession. The ENT specialist spends their entire professional career studying and caring for the ear, nose, and throat. The doctors are trained in medical and surgical care and treatment of a number of disorders for the ear, including infections, hearing loss, nerve damage, and more. The doctors also care for the nasal passages and sinuses, which are a major factor in allergies, the sense of smell, and breathing. In addition, the specialist also cares for the larynx and the esophagus, treating both speaking and swallowing problems.
